Board Commitment

A strength of the school's commitment to diversity has been the work of the board of trustees and administration in the past several years. The Hamlin mission statement was revised in 2004 to reflect a better and more specific commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. The board committee on community examines school events, supports increased socioeconomic diversity, and conducts on-going analysis of the climate and program of the school. Strategic Plan 2004 underscores a diverse and inclusive community as a major goal for the school, both to reflect better the diversity of San Francisco and to support an inclusive community. Two important documents, Building Community and Affording Hamlin, characterize the school's commitment to a broad definition of community.

There is clear understanding in the board, administration, and faculty of the importance of having role models for girls of color in the faculty. Currently at Hamlin over one-fifth of our teachers are people of color. Faculty and staff members from different cultures, religions, and sexual orientation are members of the Hamlin faculty and staff.

Excerpt from the Hamlin School Mission Statement

Hamlin is committed to be an inclusive community where diversity is a component of excellence and all members of the community are respected. We welcome and benefit from the perspectives that emerge from a diversity of ethnicity, culture, religion, socioeconomic status, learning style, sexual orientation, and family structure. The participation of all is important to the health of the community.
