From the Head of School
The education of a young woman in today's world is a precious responsibility.
Dear Friends and Visitors,
Welcome to our website, and thank you for taking time to explore our magnificent school for girls. As Hamlin’s 11th head of school, I am proud to represent this community and tell you why it is such a special place.
When I think about the mission, history and culture of The Hamlin School, the powerful words of Aristotle come immediately to mind: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit.” Hamlin, the oldest non-sectarian school for girls in the western United States, has been in the habit of excellence in education for girls since the 19th century. Our educational mission, inspired by Sarah Dix Hamlin’s leadership in 1896 and still infused by her pioneering spirit today, compels our talented faculty to prepare young girls to meet the challenges of their time. At Hamlin, girls are taught to step forward with their ideas, questions, and opinions and to use their critical and creative thinking skills to make the world better. We expect our girls to recognize and treasure their interdependence while celebrating their individuality and diverse backgrounds, and we encourage them to keep the school’s creed at the heart of their behavior and decision-making: Be Respectul. Be Responsible. Be Honest. Be Caring. Be Positive.
Opportunities for leadership and public speaking, competitive athletics and physical education, service learning, outdoor experiences, and character education are integral to our program and complement the rigorous study of literature, history, mathematics, science, world languages, and the arts. Hamlin girls love to learn, they take pride in their accomplishments, and they feel confident and fully prepared when they move on to secondary school.
This website is a portal to our vibrant community, and I extend a warm invitation to you to visit the school. I look forward to the opportunity to welcome you in person.
Sincerely Yours,
Wanda M. Holland Greene
