Science

At Hamlin, teachers in science endeavor to help students

  • Learn that science is a constantly advancing discipline.
  • Discover new knowledge and demonstrate what they have learned using current models, methods, technology and tools for scientific exploration. An inquiry based, experiential approach will reinforce the investigative nature of science and will nurture ideas about universal principles.
  • Gain a better understanding that all abiotic and biotic elements on earth are connected, and as a result they will become more responsible stewards of their environment.
  • Develop confidence as critical scientific thinkers and be able to design research questions, demonstrate scientific writing skills, and apply their inquiry techniques to their everyday lives.
  • Understand their bodies in regard to sexuality, body image, and nutrition and will be prepared to make healthy decisions.

The kindergarten through eighth grade science program is designed using an upward spiral model, so that knowledge can be constructed in a supporting, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environment. Concepts in biology, geology, environmental science, physics, chemistry, engineering, health, and foundation skills are introduced and developed throughout a student's time at Hamlin. Critical thinking and problem solving are essential elements of the program. While conducting labs, observing demonstrations, participating in discussions, and engaging in research, students are asked to formulate hypotheses, prepare written summaries of their results, and arrive at conclusions that are both original and reasonable. As students move through Lower and Middle School they will learn how to formulate questions, make predictions, conduct investigations, collect and analyze data, draw and evaluate conclusions, and present information. Driven by their curiosity for the unknown, their enthusiasm of investigation, and their joy of discovery, students use their scientific knowledge to identify and address problems on a daily basis.

Our science program is enhanced by utilizing the local organizations, resources and nearby ecosystems. Within ten minutes of Hamlin, students investigate the bay, the Marin Headlands, wetlands, woodland forests, tide pools, and the flora and fauna of the California coast. Additionally, Middle School students travel to Yosemite National Park and Golden Gate National Recreation Area for extended study. Local science and technology museums provide our students with a wide range of educational programs and hands-on exhibits. Our cutting edge scientific equipment and technology give the students opportunities to investigate, record, and present their findings.

At Hamlin, students work toward gaining a full understanding of scientific mysteries to establish connections between their findings and their own lives. Ultimately, the investigative and reporting skills they gain will help students to develop a love of learning and a confidence in themselves as scientists.
