Librarians are always on hand to help with research or just to find a good book.
The newly renovated Coreen Ruiz Hester Library (dedicated May 31, 2007) houses over 17,000 volumes and boasts magnificent views of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge.
Located in historic Stanwood Hall, the library provides an elegant, quiet space where students can find information, sharpen their research skills, study, or simply enjoy a great book. There are inviting and cozy settings in the solarium study area and reading rooms that create quiet, peaceful settings conducive to both individual and group work.
The collection includes children's picture books, junior fiction novels, reference books, curriculum-based non-fiction books, biographies, middle school fiction, professional and parenting resource books, and a video collection.
There are iMac computers in the library for academic use offering Internet access to the library catalog and online databases. Students may check out books anytime during library hours. Classes are scheduled in the library on a weekly basis, and library time is devoted to reading stories that relate to appropriate themes being taught in classrooms. Collaborative planning, teaching, and evaluation of units between librarians and classroom teachers occurs throughout the school year. There is an emphasis on the integration of information literacy skills and the promotion and development of literature and book choices that support The Hamlin School's academic standards.
The new library facility was dedicated in September 2002, and in April 2003 the library was recognized as an award winning library for its excellence in design from American Libraries. Only 39 libraries in the United States received this recognition in design that year.
