Support Services
The Hamlin mission is to provide an engaging and challenging academic program conducted in an environment of encouragement and support. To ensure that we meet our goal, the school provides learning specialists and counselors in both divisions to meet the learning and social-emotional needs of all students.
The Lower School program seeks to develop an understanding and appreciation of a student's learning profile while also identifying a student's strengths. Early identification and intervention of learning needs are important goals. Aware of the work of Mel Levine, the Lower School conducts Grand Rounds, a monthly review of all students in each grade conducted with teachers, specialists, learning specialists, counselor, and division head. The student support team, comprised of the division head, learning specialist, and counselor, meets weekly to update and track student progress. As part of the regular curriculum in grades 2-4, students learn about how the brain functions and different learning profiles.
The goal in the Middle School is to provide ongoing individual remediation and support to students with learning differences and/or academic needs. Students meet individually or in small groups with the Middle School learning specialist to develop good study and test-taking skills. Class visits by the learning specialist in the middle school encourage a student's understanding of her learning style and promote students' self-advocacy with teachers. Student accommodations, which may include extended time for test taking or the use of a laptop computer, may be implemented.
School counselors are involved in the regular daily of life at Hamlin. Participating in field trips, class and adviser meetings, the counselors provide support for students and parents for the issues that arise for girls growing up--everything from friendship issues to life events.
The teacher serves as an important point of contact between all of a child's teachers and the child's family; it is the advisor who keeps an eye out for academic or behavioral themes that might emerge across several different classes.
