Dear Hamlin Families,
Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year. It is hard to believe that the start of another school year is upon us!
As a child, back to school was all about kids: new clothes, shopping for school supplies, the anticipation of teacher assignments, seeing classmates after a long summer. I never contemplated what back to school was like for parents beyond the obvious relief of having the kids back in school and on a regular schedule. As a parent, I now realize that we contribute a great deal to the life of the school, and our engagement impacts our children’s educational experience all year long.
Every parent is automatically a member of the Hamlin Parents Association. The PA has two simple and vitally important goals. The first is to foster an environment of fun, friendship, and inclusivity that will continuously strengthen our community. The second is to raise critical funds that support academic excellence at all stages of the Hamlin journey, K through 8.
The first social event of the school year will be the All-School Community Picnic on Sunday, September 7. All families – parents, students, and siblings -- are invited to an afternoon of food, karaoke, games, and storytelling as we reconnect with old friends and welcome new families to Hamlin. On Friday, September 26, we will hold the Seventh Annual Hamlin Golf Classic. This year the tournament will be a day of golf and revelry in the spirit of Caddyshack, followed by an evening celebration of dinner, libations, and dancing that welcomes golfers and non-golfers alike. As the fall comes to a close and we move into winter, we will invite the entire Hamlin community to Winterfest on December 6 for a full day of activities, games, gingerbread house decorating, and more! On January 24, we will continue our tradition of Hamlin Harvest, in which we celebrate Hamlin’s service to our San Francisco community by preparing a huge and festive meal for residents of the Hamilton Family Center. Finally, we will close the year’s events with our fabulous Hamlin Gala in March.
The best way to connect with the Hamlin community is to volunteer alongside your fellow Hamlin parents. We welcome your enthusiasm, skills, and time! Please visit the Parents Association section of the Hamlin website to learn more about the PA. You can find a list of our major events as well as our community committees including the Hamlin Diversity Council, Lend-A-Hand, Eco-Council, Library Committee, Lunch Coordinators, S.P.E.A.K. committee, and many more. The Parents Association welcomes your participation, so join the fun! Please fill out a volunteer form to let us know where your interests lie, and we will reach out to you to suggest ways in which you can get involved. Be sure to keep an eye out for ongoing volunteer opportunities as well as important news and parent resources on the Parents section of the website.
Wishing you a happy fall and an exciting 2014-2015 school year,
Parents Association President & Grade 3 and 5 Parent
