Curriculum
Technology
The goal of the technology department is to help students see technology as a tool that they can actively incorporate into their learning. Through a collaborative partnership that includes the classroom teachers and technology department, skills are integrated and developed within the framework of the curriculum.
Except for keyboarding in third grade and small sessions in Middle School concerning Media Literacy and Internet safety, all of the technology at The Hamlin School is project-based. The classes either use the laptops in the classrooms or schedule time in the technology lab to enhance their curriculum through the use of technology.
The Hamlin School has an extensive computer network throughout the campus, which includes approximately 240 computers and 15 printers operating on a campus-wide secure wireless network. The Lower School has one technology lab, with 17 desktop computers, a projector, and two networked printers. In addition, there is one mobile laptop cart for the Lower School and three laptop carts for the Middle School, each containing 25 MacBooks. Eighty percent of our classrooms and teaching spaces are equipped with mounted projectors with integrated sound systems. The school provides the following technology resources for the students and teachers: scanners, digital camcorders, digital cameras, iPods, science probes, midi keyboards, portable keyboards, interactive whiteboards, and document cameras. Every head teacher and specialist is provided with a laptop for school use. The school maintains several servers on which students and teachers can store, share, and access their work. Middle School students, as well as all faculty members and staff, are provided with school email accounts.
Both the laptop carts and technology lab provide environments that facilitate self-directed exploration and learning. As new components are introduced, students integrate age-appropriate technology with guidance from the adults in the community. Commonly used applications include:
| Microsoft Word | Kidspiration |
| Microsoft Excel | Inspiration |
| Microsoft PowerPoint | Pixie |
| iPhoto | MediaBlender |
| iMovie | Microworlds, Jr. |

The Hamlin School also provides a safe computing environment for the students that include a Firewall, Internet filters, virus protection, and supervised computer use. All members of our community sign an Acceptable Use Policy that is reviewed annually.
